The headquarters of the Bulgarian Development Bank once again became a filming location for a Bulgarian production. Key opening and closing scenes of the documentary “Next Stop - James Bourchier” were shot in the bank’s iconic building. The film is dedicated to the life and legacy of one of the most influential European journalists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The story of “the Irishman with a Bulgarian heart”
The documentary traces the life of James Bourchier, long-time Balkan correspondent of The Times, whose reporting shaped public opinion and influenced political decision-making across Europe between 1888 and 1920. Through his sharp analyses and principled positions on key regional issues, he established himself not only as a journalist but also as an informal diplomat and a strong advocate of Bulgaria’s national cause.
His role was particularly significant during the Balkan Wars, World War I, and the Paris Peace Conference, when his writings resonated as a voice in support of national justice.
Scenes filmed at the BDB building
Important scenes recreating the cold morning of 30 December 1920 - the day of Bourchier’s death - were filmed in the lobby of the bank. The building’s architectural setting contributed to the authentic atmosphere of the period and added visual depth to the production.
Production and international locations
The film is directed by Petar Gaytandzhiev, known for his documentary work on notable personalities and public themes. It is produced by Doli Media Studio, with the financial support of the National Film Center and in cooperation with the State Archives Agency. The screenplay is written by Irina Kotseva.
Part of the interviews were filmed in Ireland, including at Trinity College Dublin and the National Library of Ireland. The crew also visited Bourchier’s birthplace, Bruff, to present a more complete picture of his life and professional path.
A figure deeply connected to Bulgaria
Shortly after arriving in Bulgaria, Bourchier became deeply immersed in the country’s culture and formed lasting friendships across different social groups. The Czech painter Jan Mrkvička immortalised him in the painting “Rachenitsa” as “the Irishman with a Bulgarian heart”, dressed in traditional Bulgarian attire among local dancers.
Following his death on 30 December 1920, Sofia paid tribute with remarkable public respect. His body was laid out for mourning at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and he was later buried near the Rila Monastery, in accordance with his wish, formalised by decree of Tsar Boris III.
The premiere of “Next Stop - James Bourchier” is expected later this year.
